Robert H. Henninger, P.E.

TITLE

Principal Engineer

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program manager and principal investigator for thermal, environmental and energy systems analysis; development, application and validation of energy simulation software; energy savings and economic analysis of HVAC systems and central plant equipment applied to commercial buildings; commercial and industrial building energy audits and technical surveys.

EDUCATION

B.S.M.E.                      University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana           1964

M.S.M.E.                     University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana           1965

EXPERIENCE

Mr. Henninger has over 36 years of experience in performing contract R&D and applications engineering programs concentrated in the principal areas of commercial and industrial building energy efficiency studies, development and application of building and energy systems simulation/analysis software, and laboratory investigations.

Mr. Henninger was involved in the early development of building energy analysis computer programs, developing the first public domain program for the Post Office back in the early 1970's which used ASHRAE accepted algorithms for modeling building envelopes and simulating HVAC systems and equipment.  Subsequently, additional contract development work was performed for other programs such as AXCESS, NECAP, ECUBE III, SCOUT, DOE-2, BLAST and for specialized programs such as Concept Simulation Program for Hardened Military Site HVAC and Process Cooling Systems for the U.S. Army CERL.  Contract activities involved not only software development but also preparation of user's manuals, conducting of training classes, maintaining and upgrading program codes and field validation of accuracy.

Mr. Henninger has conducted commercial and industrial energy engineering programs for such facilities as Main Post Offices, Bulk Mail Centers, Veterans Administration Hospitals, U.S. Army Arsenals, Ammunition Plants and Forts, U.S. Air Force hangars, the Naval Research Laboratory, NASA laboratory buildings, high schools, manufacturing plants, and multi-family residences.  Activities have ranged from walk-through audits to development of basewide energy management plans requiring field investigating of buildings, quantification of energy use patterns through metering and computer simulation, the identification and evaluation of energy conserving modifications, and life cycle cost analysis.

Currently, Mr. Henninger is performing software testing for the new EnergyPlus building energy analysis program being developed by the U. S. DOE.  He is modeling a series of reference buildings whose specifications are described in the ASHRAE Standard 140P Standard Method of Test in order to test the accuracy of EnergyPlus to simulate various types of thermal loadings.  The project requires interfacing with principal investigators at the U.S. Army CERL who are also participating in the USDOE program.

For seven years Mr. Henninger has been project manager and principal investigator of GARD's Commercial Building Systems Analysis contract with the Gas Research Institute.  Numerous energy and economic analyses and marketing studies have been performed using the DOE-2 building energy analysis program to investigate the local and national cost effective application of gas cooling and dehumidification equipment to commercial buildings.

Mr. Henninger was also the principal investigator on U.S. Army Energy Engineering Analysis Programs and Energy Savings Opportunities Surveys conducted for the Rock Island Arsenal, Detroit Arsenal, Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Ft. McCoy.  The work involved managing a team of engineers who performed onsite surveys of hundreds of buildings, evaluated energy efficiency improvement retrofits and prepared programming documentation to implement cost effective modifications.
