Dear Bldg-sim users,
Is there any comparison between TRACE (the energy analysis software
developed by Trane) and eQUEST, except the difference in price :+)? As I
know, eQUEST has similar functionality as TRACE but it is free. I think
there might be some difference in other aspects of these two software that
make TRACE worthy of its price. Any insight or clue on this issue is
appreciated.
Thanks,

I use both...my opinion:
eQuest:
* Great for fast energy estimating...forget about bin calculations
* Fast/Easy input. Not much control of room/zone inputs.
* Great looking output reports
* Good if you know DOE 2.2 because you can edit in detailed mode
* Not much good for calculating room/zone loads, sizing equipment
* Seems to be targeted to people with less simulation experience
Trace:
* Excellent mechanical equipment simulation (especially Trane equipment)
* Good alternative analysis for mechanical measures
* Total control of all room/zone characteristics (envelope, ventilation,
schedules, etc.)
* Room/Zone input is slow but excellent for calulating room/zone loads and
sizing equipment
* Superb telephone support from Trane
* Seems to be targeted to Energy and Engineering professionals
Trace is a favorite of firms that do HVAC engineering because it can also
be used for load calculations. However, models derived from Trace load
calulations are usually to detailed for energy estimating. Models become
too complex and slow to calculate results.
