[BLDG-SIM] Thermal Ice Storage using Phase Change Material

There were one or two US manufacturer of alternative PCMs for cool thermal storage during the height of the TES boom (Transphase) that are no longer in business. Sounded like a great idea at the time, but the economics never worked out. Storage density was not as good as water and cost was far greater.

The main manufacturer of such media that I am aware of today is Cristopia.

Their web site indicates, however, that they only offer media with 0C (water) and 27C phase change temperatures.

The 1993 ASHRAE Design Guide for Cool Thermal Storage (currently out of print) has a chapter on eutectic materials.

As I recall, DOE-2.1E used 5 styles of Ice TES, including Eutectic Salts. Not sure how TES was translated into eQuest (DOE-2.2).

Subject: [BLDG-SIM] Thermal Ice Storage using Phase Change Material

Does anyone know whether a product exists or research has been done on using replacing water with Phase Change Material for thermal storage systems. The phase change should have a similar heat of fusion as water (314 kJ/kg) but a melting point at ~40-45°F.

Thanks
Ian
