[BLDG-SIM] [EnergyPlus_Support] EnergyPlus Building SImulation Time

If you're concerned about single threaded speed then you should look for an Intel XEON CPU system
with 800 mhz front side bus. These CPUs were produced as high as 3.8 Ghz, the internal data paths are
basically twice as wide as a Pentium 4, and with proper cooling etc. the 3.6 GHz and 3.8 Ghz chips
will  run well North of  4.3 Ghz. These are 130 w parts at stock speed and you will be blowing 170+ w
up each CPU  -- most of these systems are dual socket and you have to have a matched pair so  >>>
most have 2 CPU chips installed. Intel's primary motherboard for this generation of  XEON requires at
least a 650 w power supply at stock speeds......  Boot time with a Barracuda RAID is truly impressive,
run times as well.  Don't forget low latency memory !!!!  Unfortunately these chips have had almost no
depreciation in the marketplace and will run you over $1500 for a matched "unlocked" pair on E-bay.....
that's just the chips.
bye....

Execution time depends greatly on the types of features in the model -
daylighting, number of surfaces, number of zones, number of HVAC systems,
natural ventilation, etc.

An annual simulation of the LgOffVAV example file (16 zones, served by one VAV
air handler) takes 5-6 minutes on a 2.1 GHZ machine with 2 GB memory.

If you find execution speed to be an issue, CPU speed and adequate RAM are
important. RAM requirements change on the fly depending on what is in the
simulation. You can use the Windows Task Manager to monitor memory
requirements. Generally 2GB should be more than adequate. Dual-cores do not
help much, since EnergyPlus is not capable of using more than one core.

>From a modeling perspective, keep it simple, as few zones as necessary, as few
surfaces, as necessary, and only model the features that are important to the
task at hand.

EnergyPlus uses one CPU core, so dual-core wil

Hi All,

I am concern about..

How much time it would take for simulating Energy analysis for an
average complexity Building in EnergyPlus program.

What is the computer configuration required for completing the
simulation in a reasonable amount of time.
